Awards Season begins with the Super Bowl of award shows, the Golden Globe Awards. And Filipino American talent in both front of the camera and behind-the-scenes are earning collaborative recognition through their contributions. 


Presented by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the Golden Globes shine a spotlight towards the best in both television and motion pictures. In addition, its winners become the precursors of who the winners will be in the following awards shows thereafter most notably, the Academy Awards.

And, the event is going to be special this Sunday with 2018's representation of diversity and culture. Among the Filipino American talent in front of the camera and behind-the-scenes who contributed their skills into their movie and TV projects, the nominees are…


TELEVISION:

Darren Criss


Darren Criss in "The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story"
As the doomed antagonist Andrew Cunanan in FX’s "The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story," Darren Criss is nominated for Best Performance by an Actor In A Limited Series or Made-For-Television-Movie.  And, much like his Emmy win for Best Actor at the 2018 Emmy Awards, if he takes home the Golden Globe, he will become the first Filipino American to do so.


FX’s "The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story"



The second season of "American Crime Story" received a nomination for Best Television - Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television.  The miniseries focused on serial killer Andrew Phillip Cunanan (portrayed by Darren Criss) who terrorized the U.S. in a killing spree, most notably the murder of fashion designer Gianni Versace in 1997 under many guises and identities just for the sake of wanting the lifestyle of the rich and famous.  FilAm actors Carlin James, Isa Briones, Alberto Issac ("Crazy Ex-Girlfriend"), Ruben Madera, Zedrick Restauro and Broadway veteran stage actor, Jon Jon Briones (who portrayed Andrew's father, Modesto) are also in the miniseries.


NBC's "The Good Place"

Currently airing its third season on Thursday nights, the Ted Danson/Kristen Bell comedy, "The Good Place" is one of two television shows nominated for Best Television Comedy.  Filipino Canadian Manny Jacinto who plays the failed but lovable EDM deejay Jason Mendoza also star in the critically-raved TV show.


Showtime's "Kidding"

Starring Jim Carrey, "Kidding" is the other television show nominated for Best Television Comedy. The half hour dark comedy premiered in 2018 and was renewed for a second season.  The Filipina American actress Ginger Gonzaga plays Vivian, a woman dying of cancer whom Carrey's character, Jeff begins to date.



MOTION PICTURE:


"Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse"





Sony Pictures' "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse" is one of two animated movies nominated for Best Motion Picture - Animated.  Nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy for 2017's "The Edge of Seventeen," Hailee Steinfeld voiced the character of Gwen Stacey in the animated 2018 Spider-Man movie.  Moreover, Louie del Carmen, John Butiu and Ryan Rubi are notable Filipino American animators for the film.


"Ralph Breaks The Internet"

Walt Disney Studios' "Ralph Breaks The Internet" is the second animated movie nominated for Best Motion Picture - Animated.  The story is by Josie Trinidad while Nicole Scherzinger ("Moana") voiced Mo's Mom.


"Crazy Rich Asians"

Warner Brothers Studios' "Crazy Rich Asians" stars Filipino American stand-up comedian Nico Santos.  He can be seen weekly every Thursday night on television on NBC's "Superstore" now in its fourth season.  The most successful and highest grossing romantic comedy feature film costars Kris Aquino.  It is nominated for Best Motion Picture Musical or Comedy.


"A Star Is Born"

Warner Brothers Studios' "A Star Is Born" starring Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga is nominated for Best Motion Picture - Drama.  It was lensed by cinematographer Matthew Libatique, ASC. In terms of contrast, he shot "Venom," also a 2018 feature film release.


"Black Panther"

The Dora Milaje costumes of Wakanda were inspired by tribal Philippine wear visually designed by Anthony Francisco for Walt Disney Studios' "Black Panther" nominated for Best Motion Picture - Drama.  He previously designed Baby Groot for the 2017 film "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2."


The 76th Golden Globes Awards will broadcast live on NBC at 8pm Eastern / 5pm Pacific this Sunday, January 6, 2019 from the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, CA.
